The Centre for ASEAN Regionalism Universiti Malaya (CARUM), which is the first regional centre to operate under the Asia-Europe Institute, is pleased to announce a series of impactful workshops and book publications focused on critical issues in Southeast Asia. Funded by a generous grant of RM239K from the Open Society Foundation (OSF), these initiatives aim to address the major pillars of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The first cycle of the OSF funding is targeted at funding four workshops and the ensuing publications:
Successful Workshops
1. Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Southeast Asia
Date: 15th – 17th November 2023
Venue: Ra Premiere Hotel, Jakarta
Host: Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta
This workshop focused on sustainable agriculture practices and food security challenges in the region, bringing together experts and stakeholders to develop actionable strategies. The outcomes are being compiled into a book titled "Sustainable Agriculture in Southeast Asia: Towards Climate Resilience, Digitalization and Food Security." The editors are Rajah Rasiah, Dianwicaksih Arieftiara and Nur Annizah Binti Ishak.

2. Industrial Policy and Industrial Upgrading in Southeast Asia
Date: 14th-17th March 2024
Venue: University of the Philippines, Diliman, Manila
This workshop addressed industrial policy and strategies for industrial upgrading in Southeast Asia, aiming to enhance regional economic growth and competitiveness. The findings and discussions will be published in a book titled "Industrial Policy and Industrial Structural Change in Southeast Asia". The editors are Rajah Rasiah, Rene Ofreneo, and Chandran VGR.

Upcoming Workshops
3. Digitalization and Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia
Date: 14-15 October 2024
Venue: Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur
Scheduled for October 2024, this workshop will explore the intersection of digitalization and climate resilience, focusing on innovative solutions and policies to enhance regional resilience to climate change. The proceedings will be documented in a book titled " Digitalization and Climate Resilience: Towards Strengthening the Sustainable Development Ecosystem in Southeast Asia." The editors are Rajah Rasiah, Nurliana Kamaruddin, Roy Anthony Rodgers and Sonia Kumari Selvarajan.

4. Poverty and Inequality in Southeast Asia
Planned for March 2025
The final workshop in this series will address the critical issues of poverty and inequality in Southeast Asia, aiming to develop comprehensive policies and strategies to reduce socioeconomic disparities. The insights from this workshop will be compiled into a book titled "Poverty and Inequality in Southeast Asia."
Impact and Goals
These 4 workshops are designed to produce scholarly books that offer in-depth analysis and practical recommendations on each topic, contributing to academic knowledge and informing policy-making in Southeast Asia. By bringing together leading experts, policymakers, and stakeholders, these initiatives aim to foster regional collaboration and drive sustainable development.
